Travel Narita-Aizu

The University of Aizu is located in Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture in the Tohoku Region of Japan. Aizu-Wakamatsu City may be reached in 4-5 hours by train from Narita International Airport most conveniently as follows:
  1. Narita Airport to Ueno station in Tokyo by Keisei Line. This a local express. There a few types of this train. You can use Skyliner (the fastest one, once per hour, around 60 min to Ueno) or ordinary express (70 minutes to Ueno, twice cheaper than Skyliner, coming every 15 minutes). All these trains come to Ueno-Keisei station in the center of Tokyo.

  2. From Ueno-Keisei go to the ground and in 150-200 meters there is Ueno-JR station (it is simply called Ueno station). It is quite big. There are some pointers in English everywhere inside. You should take Shinkansen bullet train, Tohoku Line to Koriyama. Shinkansen Tohoku Line is colored in green at all pointers. It takes about 70-90 min. to Koriyama, depending on the type, time of the day, etc.

IMPORTANT: A few of these trains do not stop at Koriyama, so check it before you take the train.

You can buy tickets at Ueno station directly to Aizu-Wakamatsu. There are two types of tickets: reserved and non-reserved. First are more expensive, the travel time is fixed, the place is booked. Non-reserved: no place is booked, you take any vacant place (usually in cars 1-5), time is not limited.

  3. At Koriyama. Say key words "Aizu-Wakamatsu", they will show you the platform. Take the nearest train. It takes 70-90 min depending on the train. Official name of this line: Ban-etsu West Line.

The last train from Koriyama to Aizu-Wakamatsu is 22:17. Your hotel will be in a walking distance from the station. Its name is Washington Hotel. Go straight from the station across two streets and you will see the hotel at the left hand.

  4. Take some cash in Japanese yens, since credit cards are not so widely used in Japan as in Europe/US. It is better to change currency in Narita. TOHO bank and Fuji bank in Aizu-Wakamatsu also provide currency exchange. For return trip to Tokyo (only train tickets) you will need around 15.000-17.000 yen.

  5. You will be asked to return tickets when you leave every station.

  6. Train timetables: Tokyo-Aizu and Aizu-Tokyo (JPEG, 50K).

Weather

It can be snowing in Aizu in March with about 0C degrees temperature. If you want to walk, you need a coat and high boots. Bus service will be provided from the hotel to the university.
