A "computer network" in the broadest sense of the term means a network made up of data processing devices that can transmit data, such as computers and smartphones. The internet for example is the world's biggest computer network. Computer networks are the very foundation of our information society. By linking up different data processing devices, networks allow us to benefit from using many applications.
Research in this field is twofold: basic research, which examines the fast and secure transmission of all forms of data; and applied research in a range of forms, which investigates how to get the best uses from linking up computers.
