Graduate Department of Computer and Information Systems

In the doctoral program, students use a wide range of highly specialized knowledge and techniques to solve problems in computer science and related fields, and to research the structure and function of information systems. Students will acquire an understanding of trends in their research fields, a sense of ethics, knowledge of intellectual property rights, the ability to write papers in English, and the ability to test hypotheses, and will conduct independent research activities based on these skills.
Students must obtain at least 10 credits for completion. (For Students admitted in AY2020 Autumn or later)

For Students admitted in AY2020 Spring or before

The Doctoral Program does not offer any official lectures. Only research guidance under the name "research courses" is offered. A research course comprises of special seminars and special research.
Students are expected to acquire specialized knowledge through reading of academic papers and discussions and to receive advanced training in research methodologies under the guidance of a group of faculty members affiliated to each field of study. Students' doctoral dissertation themes are determined through consultation with the Students' research advisors. Students conduct research and complete their doctoral dissertation under the guidance of their research advisors.

For Students admitted in AY2020 Autumn or later

The Doctoral Program offers Regular courses, Seminar courses and Research courses.
In regular courses, students will acquire the ability to grasp trends and solve problems in their research fields and also learn the ethics and knowledge of topics such as intellectual property they will need to conduct research. Students must obtain at least 2 credits. In seminar courses, students acquire the ability to write papers and give presentations in English at a high level, to verify hypotheses through critical thinking, and to create, implement, and test solutions. Students must obtain at least 8 credits.

  • As one of the methods of conducting research subjects (research guidance), we have a special training program that allows students to conduct research at research facilities outside of the university.
  • Another method of implementation is the Creation Workshop, a virtual laboratory with multiple instructional systems.
