The University of Aizu aims to become a front-line university providing the greatest range of the most up-to-date educational and research activities in the field of computer science and engineering internationally. It is a unique institution unparalleled by any other existing Japanese university, which can be seen from its policy of internationally open and competitive faculty positions. In fact, approximately 60 percent of the positions is filled by foreign faculty.
As described in the university regulations, the Office for Planning and Management, headed by the University President, is established as an internal research organization for the purpose of performing general investigative research concerning university functions, along with performing general program planning and design regarding university education and research, international exchange, public relations and publications, legal affairs, and other necessary matters concerning administrative management.
The University hopes to gain a leading position in the world in the fields of computer science and engineering. The Office makes concrete studies and plans for joint research activities inside and outside the university {\em to Advanced Knowledge for Humanity}. We seek cooperation between the University, Japanese industry, and government. Such cooperation would include technology transfer, joint university-industry ventures and government funding are sought for promising projects.
Its Graduate School, organized into two graduate departments, Department of Information Systems and Department of Computer Systems, represents the research front of the University of Aizu and offers a full spectrum of modern research/education in CS/CE.
The University of Aizu is the first Japanese university which offers systematically organized curricula tailored to the essentials of computer science and engineering.
Its mission is to create leading computer scientists and engineers who can play active roles not only in Japan but internationally as well. Since computer science and engineering is a field of rapid progress and development, it is necessary to constantly improve the curricula to provide the appropriate educational experience for students.
Its Graduate School, has started with a two-year master's program in 1997 and a doctoral program in April 1999. The Office worked together with the Examining Committee on that.
Other Major Tasks:
