Mathematical Foundation of Computer Science Laboratory

/ Yasuhiko Ikebe / Professor
/ Adam Kapralski / Associate Professor
/ Zbigniew Kokosinski / Assistant Professor

Professor Ikebe, the lab head, continued his research in computational mathematics and language instruction reform through dictionary reform. Besides his academic activities he served as Student Dean (95.10-96.4) and Vice President (96.5-97.3). He enjoyed numerous speaking engagements and interviews. He conducted the undergraduate thesis supervision jointly with Asst. Prof. Y. Kikuchi of Multimedia System Lab.

Asst. Prof. Kokosinski continued to pursue his main research topic in applied combinatorics; one central issue is the theoretical and practical aspect of combinatorial object generation and parallelism. He has been qualified as a graduate faculty member for the next academic year when Graduate School opens its door.

Prof. Ikebe continued his research in numerical analysis and started research into "Virtual University on Internet" with his colleagues. Two joint papers appeared, one in a leading international journal and another in Japanese in a representative journal in Japan. See papers (1) and (2) below.

A Monbusho research grant with him serving as principal investigator enabled him to work with his colleagues on campus and his former colleagues at the U. of Tsukuba. The grant supported the proposed project of his ``The compilation of hyperdictionary for the study of English words", that formed part of the "Humanity and Computers" project, a joint project organized around several research teams. The final research report has been submitted to Monbusho.

A related paper, written in Japanese and supported in part by the said grant, was published in a representative journal in Japan. This is an invited paper. See paper (3) in the below. He taught undergraduate mathematical courses -- Math I & II and offered an SCCP project. Administrative duties of his during the academic year 96-97 include Student Dean till April 30, 1996, and Vice President May 1, 1996- March 31, 1997.
