High-speed Network Courseware Design for Synthetic Worlds

Behcet Sarikaya,
Professor, Computer Communications Laboratory

  1. ATM is accepted to be the networking technology of the future. We are setting up an ATM network in the Computer Communications Laboratory. This lab will contain an ATM switch and many workstations connected to this switch. Also there will be a direct connection with the ATM switch to be installed at the Multimedia Research Center of the University of Aizu.

  2. Video transmission is presently done using certain standardized compression techniques. MPEG is the most commonly used standard. MPEG standard gets improved constantly. The present version is MPEG-2. Standardization organizations are presently working on MPEG-4, a low bit-rate version of MPEG audio-visual coding algorithm. We did some research on MPEG-4 to be used on Personal Communication Systems (PCS). This research concentrated on the data rate aspects of multimedia transmission. Mobility aspects will be studied in the future.

  3. Course Preparation. We have prepared two sets of course material, one on Multimedia Networking and the other on Multimedia Synchronization Techniques. A set of transparencies have been prepared and these transparencies can be used as teaching material.
