Computer Music Studio Development Sound in Virtual Reality

James M. Goodwin,
Professor, Multimedia Systems Laboratory

It is important to exploit music and sound as a full partner in computer-human interfaces. To develop this potential we explore audio analogs to visual modes of expression and also develop expressive models unique to audio. This SCCP also fills a gap in the multimedia/human factors curriculum, simultaneously exploring issues in sound as well as computer tools available to manipulate sound and music. Most of the coursework, besides student-originated research projects, is reading articles and doing lab exercises. Both emphasize creative applications of technology. Topics covered in labs include: auditory display and control, psychoacoustics \& perception, audio displays and imaging, composition and notation, digital recording, fourier analysis, performance of synthesized music, modifying input sounds by computer to create new sounds, data sonification, MIDI interfacing and sequencing, FM, and spatial sound.
