ISTC consists of both the Information Processing Center and the University Library. The University of AIZU Information Network System (AINS) has three main purposes for its computing facilities which are not linked to any specific operating system or brand of computer today and in the future : open architecture, international de-facto standard, and network global architecture. Accordingly, AINS provides various kinds of services in GUI environment (Table 1). In total, there are about 540 Workstations (W/Ss), 31 network printers, and 120 local printers, including 40 W/Ss in the server room. In addition, parallel computing systems include transputer and connection machine installations: Parsytec Computer's GC1 and Thinking Machines Corporation's CM-5. The AINS network is internally composed of four functional FDDI networks (common, education, research, and administration),and is externally connected with the INTERNET through TOPIC at 192Kbps.

The University Library has been designed to provide both centralized and decentralized services. The main library is intended for general studies and reference, including recent and archived periodicals (Table 2). On a decentralized basis, each research laboratory has an autonomous research library where books and journals relevant to its particular research areas are concentrated; about 4,000 books located in all research libraries.

MUSE(Multimedia University System Environment) is a university information system and mainly consists of administration and university library systems (Table 3). The characteristic of MUSE is to provide more useful environments in multimedia that processes text as well as image data in integrated manners.
