     yPartial revision of the Regulation on Selecting a University Presidentz

    The Regulation on Selecting a University President and enforcement regulations pertaining to this regulation have been revised with the aim of simplifying administration of the selection process and the method of voting.

    Key revisionsF

       ‚PDPublic announcement of the date of the election, etc., shall be reduced from thirty days to twenty days prior to the election date.
       ‚QDThe period for recommending candidates shall be reduced from ten days to seven days after the date of public announcement.
       ‚RDProcedures for absentee voting shall be simplified.


    Visit by the Vice President of Shanghai University




      Triggered by the opening of the Fukushima Prefecture Shanghai Office, and with the aim of promoting exchange with Chinese universities, Dr. Zhou HongGang, Vice President of Shanghai University and Dr. Xhang ShiPing, Director of the International Department, National Technology Licensing Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University were invited to visit the University of Aizu on July 8th to attend an Inter-university International Exchange Seminar.
      At the Seminar, a large number of participants listened to lectures presented by representatives of both universities on the characteristics of their respective universities, measures taken towards university-industry collaboration, and so forth.

    –{Šw–K–â2   The Seminar was followed by a meeting held to exchange opinions regarding future exchange with the two universities. Agreement was reached on the promotion of further exchange in the form of faculty and student exchange, joint research and university-industry collaboration.
      Decision was also made on the continuation of discussions towards the conclusion of an exchange agreement with Shanghai University.
      On July 9th, the delegates from both universities paid a courtesy visit to Governor Sato of Fukushima Prefecture, where they reported on what they had achieved during their visit.

      The 4th International Conference on Computer and Information Technology (CIT2004), which was co-sponsored by the University of Aizu and Wuhan University, was held at Wuhan University on September 14th-16th. University President Ikegami served as Honorary General Chair and Professor Daming Wei as General Chair. The conference was attended by numerous faculty members and students from the University.
      On September 14th, President Ikegami met with Vice President Wu JunPei of Wuhan University to discuss matters related to inter-university exchange, and reached agreement on the concept of promoting exchange hereafter. The President also toured the State's Key Laboratory of Software Engineering where research into the fundamentals of software engineering and its applications is conducted.

    §’k2   On September 15th, the President paid a courtesy visit to the Hubei Government. Governor Luo Qingquan, who visited the University in April this year, expressed his hope that the University of Aizu and universities in Hubei would engage actively in exchange.
      On the same day, the President met with President Fan Mingwu of Huazhong University of Science & Technology to discuss matters related to inter-university exchange, and agreement was reached on the promotion of exchange hereafter. The President also toured the National Leading Laboratory of Laser Technology, Donghu High Technological Development Area (where university managed businesses are also under construction), and the State Engineering Research Center of Numerical Control System. §’k3


    Birth of New Doctors (Autumn Graduation Ceremony)

      The 2004 Autumn Doctoral Theses Presentations were held in the Large Conference Room on September 17th. As a result, doctorates were conferred upon four doctoral students, all of whom were foreign students. At the Presentation, each of the students gave a 30-minute presentation covering the process leading up to completion of their thesis, and the Dean and their research advisors gave some encouraging remarks.
      Of the presenters, Mr. Chandrajith Ashuboda Marasinghe has been employed by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science as a special foreign researcher, and will continue to conduct research at the University of Aizu for another two years. Mr. Mostafa Ibrahim Soliman Abdel Ghani, Mr. Mahmoud Saber and Mr. Robert R. Roxas are due to start teaching at universities in their home countries.


    Updating of the LML System

      Work to update the LML (Language Media Laboratory) System that commenced in February this year was successfully completed at the end of September.
      In addition to replacing the Sony News workstations with Sun Microsystems SunBlades, other AV and LL equipment such as projectors and speakers were also renewed. Moreover, laser discs containing learning materials specifically for use with the LML were replaced with DVD versions.

    EyReport on the Computer Science Summer Campz

      The 2004 Computer Science Summer Camp, the 8th of its kind, was held on August 7th-10th at the University of Aizu. 69 junior and senior high school students from throughout Japan and 13 junior high school students from China participated in this year's camp. Participants engaged enthusiastically in their graduation projects under the guidance of student instructors, and enjoyed exchanges that went beyond language and culture at Alts Bandai where the participants were accommodated.

    EyOpen Campusz

      This year, having changed its name and enhanced its content, open campuses were held twice, once in summer (August 6th) and once in autumn (October 9th).
    Summer stageF450 participants. In addition to providing access to the laboratories and an explanation of the University, Associate Professor Lambacher, Assistant Professor Otsuyama and Assistant Professor Khmyrova gave mock lectures, students offered campus tours, and hands-on experience of workstations were facilitated. This event proved to be very well received by the high school students who participated.
    Autumn stageFNotwithstanding the bad weather associated with a landed typhoon, 150 students attended the event which comprised a mock English test followed by a lecture explaining the answers, trends found therein and exam techniques.

        yPC Koshien 2004z

      The 2004 Personal Computer Contest for High School Students in Japan, "PC Koshien 2004", was held at the University of Aizu on November 6th-7th. Held for the second time, this event attracted applications from 463 teams comprising 1,129 individuals, and the 30 teams/80 individuals that made it through the qualifying round competed for supremacy in technology and skill.         yReport on Public Lecturesz

      This academic year's public lectures got off to a start with the first TRY Series, "Computers and Writing in English" held on June 12th; two TRY Series, four public lectures and two off-campus public lectures given by dispatched faculty members have been provided thus far. TRY Series and public lectures are offered in conjunction with the "Citizens' College" that began this academic year.
