President's Message concerning 2011Earthquake (March 16, 2011)
Wednesday, March 16, 2011
To Students, Faculty Members and Administrative Staff,
I would like to express my deepest condolence to the victims and heartfelt sympathy to the suffers of The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake.
Given the current damage situations in the Tohoku Region, the University of Aizu has decided to cancel the Degree Conferment Ceremony and to postpone the Entrance Ceremony. Also, all the classes are cancelled until the end of April. For the new students for AY 2011, we are dedicated to give any possible support, such as the extension of the deadline for admission procedures.
Fortunately, our University has not seen any severe damage, and the infrastructure in the Aizu region is safe and stable compared to other regions in Fukushima Prefecture. On the other hand, some of our current and new students are suffering from damage in their hometowns. Also, we are facing a lot of problems, such as suspension of traffic, including Tohoku Shinkansen and highways, shortages of food and gasoline and so on. Since this confused situation is expected to last for a while, we have decided to take the measures mentioned above. This is the most severe disaster that our nation has ever experienced.
Dear students, please stay safe. I understand that you are concerned about not only the safety of yourselves but also of your family members and friends. However, the power from the young is now needed to recover from this calamity. I hope that you take this situation as a challenge to improve yourselves, and get the most out of the time during the University is closed.
I also hope that, if possible, you proactively join volunteer activities for the recovery of the devastated areas. It is also a good idea to use time to focus on your research activities and improve IT skills to make use of achievements for future recovery. I am looking forward to seeing you again next academic year.
Dear faculty members, please stay safe. I would appreciate your cooperation in putting highest priority on supporting students and their activities.
Dear administrative staff, please stay safe. I would also like you to manage the facilities and utilities, computers and networks well for the students and faculty supporting students, and keep on making efforts for the recovery of devastated areas in the municipalities and Fukushima Prefecture.
Let us be united together and overcome the present critical situation.
Shigeaki Tsunoyama
President, the University of Aizu
