Computer Environment

Network Environment

The University network environment includes the Education Network, which connects exercise rooms, the Research Network, which connects the laboratories and centers, the Clerical Network, which connects sections within the Library, the Administrative Office, and the Student Affairs Division, and the Common Network, which connects all these fundamental networks. 10GigaEthernet is employed to keep the mainstream of daily information on the network secure and stable. 23 telephone lines enable us to use the network from home through dial-up access. And SSH connection also enable us to use the network through the Internet.

Computer Exercise Room 1 and 2

Computer Exercise Rooms 1 and 2 are located in the Research Quadrangles. A total of 45 workstations have been installed in each room (including one workstation for the instructor). They are used for a variety of courses relevant to Computer Literacy for 1st year students. These rooms are also used for public lectures so that people outside the University can experience use of UNIX workstations. Computer Exercise Room 1 is accessible around-the-clock for use by students. Desks in Exercise Room 2 were specially designed based on the idea of Human Engineering for better communication among students.

Computer Exercise Room 3 and 4

Computer Exercise Rooms 3 and 4 are located in the Lecture Hall. A total of 51 workstations have been installed in each room (including one workstation for the instructor) and are used for a variety of courses. These rooms are also used for public lectures so that people outside the University can experience UNIX workstations hands-on.

Hardware Workshop 1 and 2

Hardware Workshops 1 and 2 are located in the Lecture Hall. A total of 49 workstations and 25 PCs have been installed at each room (including one workstation and PC for the instructor), and are mainly used for courses involving logical circuit design and simulation, etc. for the Department of Computer Hardware. Hardware Workshop 1 is accessible around-the-clock for use by students.

CALL 1 and 2

CALL 1 and 2 are located in the Research Quadrangles. A total of 34 terminal have been installed in each room (including one terminal for the instructor), and are mainly used for English education, especially for basic education on technical writing and how to write graduation theses, etc.

iLab 1 and 2

iLab 1 and 2 are located in the Research Quadrangles. A total of 49 workstations have been installed in each room (including one workstation for the instructor), and are mainly used for basic education for English pronunciation.

Thin Clients for Faculty Members

Thin clients for faculty members' use have been installed in each faculty member's office in the Research Quadrangles. The same computer environment is provided for faculty members of the 24 laboratories of the School of Computer Science Engineering and the centers. A network printer has been installed in each laboratory and center. Those terminals are used for the purpose of research as well as e-mail, data retrieval from web sites, teaching material creation, grade input to the Administration System, and library material retrieval and reservation on the Library System.

Library System

The University Library, together with the Information Systems and Technology Center (ISTC), plays a central role in University administration in terms of providing information. The University Library employs its fundamental system LIMEDIO (produced by RICOH), a software package customized for the University of Aizu. The Library System is accessible on campus using machines administrated by the ISTC, and enables faculty and students to retrieve and/or reserve library material. The ISTC provides a comprehensive backup service for the system. The University Library has 6 reading rooms for individual use and one reading room for group use. A terminal and a workstation have been installed in each of the rooms.

Administration System

The Administration System is used at administrative sections in the offices in the Administration Complex and Student Affairs Division in the Student Hall for the purpose of personnel registration and management of academic affairs such as enrollment management, course registration management, etc. "CampusPlan(produced by SystemD)/CampusVision(produced by HitachiSystems)", a software package customized for the University is employed as the Administration System.

Support System

The backup support system is located in the network room within the ISTC. Various groups of servers, which are vital to the server-client system for the University of Aizu, are in operation 24 hours per day. A power supply equipment called "CVCF (Constant Voltage Constant Frequency)" is employed to take measures against power suspension so that data will not be lost by accident.

Individual data for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty members, common files for projects and club activities, etc. are stored in these servers. Disk capacity for individual data allocated to an individual is; 1 Gbyte for undergraduate students, 1 Gbyte for Master's Program students, 1 Gbyte for Doctoral Program students, 5Gbyte for faculty members. Backup support is provided by means of generation management in order not to lose data by accident.

These servers provide free software, etc. for computer exercise rooms and hardware workshops.

News from all over the world is distributed through these servers. "fj," "alt," "comp," and "misc" are provided as well as local news group on campus.

Through these servers, documents including free software and information involving various technologies are received and sent by the Internet.
