The University of Aizu offers a complimentary series of intensive courses in English on leading-edge IT technologies.

Those interested in learning more about IT technology, or in improving their English competence are welcome to participate.
Students may select one or more of the 4 course offerings drawn from the Graduate School of the University of Aizu. All of the intensive courses are offered for free and students will receive a certificate upon completion of each course. Each of the 4 courses consists of 7 lectures, and the duration of each lecture is 45 minutes. Each course can be completed over 3 consecutive days.
All of the lectures in the 4 intensive courses are delivered in English by professors representing a range of cultural backgrounds, selected from our multinational University of Aizu faculty. This variety provides students with an opportunity to experience different styles of English pronunciation and communication and to experience a truly global environment in which different people from different countries and cultures work together.
Our intensive courses offer a great opportunity to experience graduate school lectures, and we encourage industry professionals as well as university students who are interested in graduate studies to take advantage of this program. In particular, individuals considering entry to the Graduate School of the University of Aizu will find the intensive courses to be good preparation for future study.
In addition to university students, we also recommend our intensive program to individuals who are planning for study abroad, and to those who may be interested in developing their English competence in a technical area.

Syllabus

IT09_1
Cloud Computing -An Engine for Applications in Healthcare and Bioinformatics

bhalla Professor Subhash Bhalla
As more information becomes available through research and changes in IT infrastructure, it will become more difficult to store and disseminate data. Cloud computing offers an effective solution to information sharing problems. It is a new idea. Its demand will grow as the data flow and complexities of sharing information, increase with time. At present a limited number of Cloud Computing services are available to public.

With the help of case studies in Healthcare and Bioinformatics,an insight into facilitties and the potential offered by cloud computing will be analysed.

Topics:
A. Perspectives on related topics -
  1. Data on the Web, Virtualization,Electronic Health Records (EHR),
  2. Grid Computing and Web Services,
  3. Cloud Computing,
  4. Cloud Computing for Health-care Applications,
B. Cloud Computing for critical Processes

IT09_2
Introduction to Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits
hiroshis Professor Hiroshi Saito

Recently, VLSI circuits are designed under the support of design automation tools. Once designers specify circuit behaviors using a hardware description language such as Verilog HDL, logic synthesis tools synthesize a logic circuit from the description. Such design support tools include many optimization methods in terms of area, performance, and power consumption. These methods are formulated by a mathematical model and implemented by a programming language.

Course topics include:
  1. Why design automation tools are important?
  2. Modeling of circuit behaviors by using Verilog HDL
  3. Logic synthesis of VLSI circuits
  4. Hot topics for design automation

IT09_3
Introduction to 3D modeling and rendering in computer graphics.

fayolle Professor Pierre-Alain Fayolle

This course will study some selected topics in three dimensional modeling and rendering in computer graphics. The course will present both basic and more advanced recent material.
Prerequisites: Some basics in algorithms / data structure, programming, algebra and calculus.

----- Modeling -----
lecture 1: Introduction; parametric surfaces;
lecture 2: Subdivision surfaces;
lecture 3: Triangle meshes;
lecture 4: Implicit surfaces; Function Representation;

----- Rendering -----
lecture 5: Ray-casting;
lecture 6: Polygon rendering pipeline;
lecture 7: Implicit surfaces and volume visualization techniques

IT09_4
Semantic Information Retrieval

vkluev Professor Vitaly Klyuev

Nowadays, the Internet is the major source of information for millions of people. There are many search tools available on the net but finding appropriate text information is still difficult. The retrieval efficiency of the presently used systems cannot be significantly improved: "Bag of words" interpretation causes loosing semantics of texts. In this course, we will touch the latest achievements used in the world of search engines and have a look at the major competitors in the search engine area. We will study and analyze the approaches they use, including the Google's Universal Search technology and the Morph approach applied by another key competitor within ASK search engine. We will consider different methods designed to improve the intelligence of search engines through the use of semantics when documents are indexed and searched.

After completing this course, students will understand "secrets" of new search engine technologies and be able to apply the knowledge obtained for sophisticated searching procedures.
