Introduction
Summarizing Tools for General Purpose Search Engines
Background
  • The role of the Internet as a tool to get knowledge and valuable information on different topics has been increasing drastically over the past years. Studying and working with tools to access information and knowledge on the web are an important part of software engineering education.
What will you resolve?
  • Search engines allow users to retrieve information from the web using keywords and phrases. Many words and phrases have multiple meanings, so when search engines provide users with small snippets of texts taken from the retrieved documents, users usually cannot evaluate the relevancy of a document using this information. To improve the quality of retrieval, we are going to provide end-users with informative summaries created on the fly. We are designing summarizing methods and applications for Web-browsers which can run on client computers or on servers of Internet service providers.
What are you going to develop?
  • Our web applications will work as a front-end part of a general purpose search engine. They will automatically create informative summaries for retrieved documents, and then present them to end-users. The aim is to reduce the amount of information to be analyzed manually.
The advantage of the approach /How will the solution impact the world?
  • Utilizing a new information retrieval tool which will generate more precise descriptions of retrieved documents than Google’s snippets of text, users will be able to search for information more efficiently.
