学生生活について

I graduated from Aizu high school. My family lives within Aizu-Wakamatsu City, but I live alone in an apartment. When I was a 1st-year student of high school, I decided to go to the University of Aizu. I did not have a particular reason for choosing the University, and there was also another option to study for other universities' entrance exams. However, I chose the University of Aizu since I wanted to study about computers and to do something using a computer.
After my admission to the University, I took many courses, including math, English and programming. My favorite type of courses is programming, as it was my first time to study programming after entering the University. These courses related to programming are time-consuming for me to do the assignments. However, I also study programming by myself as something extra outside the class, because programming may be necessary for my graduation thesis.

入学してからの勉強や課題、研究について

Many people tend to think entering the University of Aizu is difficult because some classes are taught in English. However, you can keep up with your classes without worrying too much once you enter the University. It may be difficult at the beginning, but you will gradually understand what teachers are saying while taking classes.
If you do not understand lectures, you can study with a substantial number of book materials at the University Library, or ask your friends/teachers. In programming courses that most students study for the first time in their life, it may take a plenty of time in the exercise classes. Other courses related to computers are required to take, so it is not uncommon to face the computer half a day if you seriously concentrate on your assignments.

Next year, I will conduct research on astronomical simulations, high-speed computing and others in Assistant Professor Nakasato's laboratory. The research has not yet officially started, but I am studying programming on my own as a preparation to start research smoothly. Although one year is short as a period to work on my graduation thesis, I will make efforts to produce a satisfying result.

I am originally from Fukushima Prefecture. I was admitted to the University by recommendation. Although I majored in science courses in high school, I actually had experience only on the Internet and email with a computer. So I was nervous, feeling that I would not keep up with my classes at the University before admission. I enrolled in the University, having persuaded myself that I could follow classes. I was actually able to keep up with my class and acquire credits to become a 4th-year student. However, I remember that I had difficulties with math courses right after admission in my 1st year because I underestimated the studies at the University. But I did not experience so many hardships after seriously taking the studies. On the other hand, the courses related to computers were less difficult for me, even though they were the first computer courses I took. You can gradually understand by reading related materials and taking exercises classes even if you do not understand at the beginning. So you do not need to hold back even if a field is unfamiliar to you. I have few classes to take now as I am in my 4th year, but I come to the University everyday in order to prepare for meetings of the laboratory and to do my assignments. Since I will advance to the University of Aizu Graduate School after my graduation from the Undergraduate School, I am planning to promote my research step by step from now.

I am working part-time as an SA at the University (assisting at the University classes) and as a tutor for junior high school students. Faculty and the University requested me to work as an SA, and a temporary-employment agency gives me tutoring jobs. General tasks for SAs are to mark exam papers and to give students advice at exercise classes. I am also working as an SA at the Office for Learning Support. As students can study here at their own paces, I work on problems with students by giving advice to those who have difficulties with their classes and assignments. I tutor my students at their houses, using teaching materials. Students get pouty if I give them harsh words/comments too frequently in order to have them study harder, so finding a goo balance is difficult. Nevertheless, I feel that it is worth working as a tutor when my students successfully pass high school entrance exams.

I was always trying to balance study and part-time work well, but I had a hard time when most of part-time jobs were on weekdays before. I had to go to part-time jobs before getting my assignments done, so I had to hurry back to the University to finish up the assignments after working part-time. I remember it was very hard and I was very busy when I was taking the teaching profession courses in particular. However, based on the experience, "to teach something to people," which I gained through working part-time, I became conscious of "how creatively I can teach for students." This point was made the best use especially for the teaching profession courses. Also, as an event staff for town, I help operation of festivals and selling local products at several places from last year. Through participating in these events, I was able to gain what I was not able to usually experience on daily campus life. I think that working part-time within a scope which does out affect study is very meaningful to broaden our experiences.

Examples: Other part-time jobs

  • Cram school teacher
It becomes hard to work during the time of intensive summer/winter courses, but hourly pay is good and you can make close relations with students.
  • Cashier at a supermarket
This is mostly working as a cashier at supermarkets around the University. A number of the University students work at the supermarkets near the University.
  • Tutor
Hourly pay is good, but you can rarely work for many hours. So this may not be good income in total. Some families offer to have dinner with them.
  • Izakayas (Japanese-style pub)
Sometimes you start working after school and finish it in the following day. This is recommended to those who do not mind offering services such as working as a waiter/waitress and cleaning.
  • Convenience stores
This is a typical place for the University students to work part-time. People who look familiar on campus work at a convenience store around midnight. Depending on a store, working shifts are flexible.
  • TA/SA
Tasks are to assist at the University classes, to mark exam papers and to print out materials/handouts. It is important to establish a good relationship with the faculty who are in charge with the relevant classes.

学生生活について

I originally have an interest in the space-related field and I like studying science-related subjects like physics. But my idea that computer knowledge/skills will be very useful in upcoming future and my interest in it made me take an entrance exam of the University of Aizu. A half year has passed since my admission. Now I am struggling with the courses related to programming, which I started to learn at the University. I learn many new concepts at a class and understanding the concept is laborious. At an exercise class that requires writing and running a program, I relatively meet the deadline at the last minute. When I got struck, I sometimes play a musical instrument for a change. Good breaks enable me to concentrate on studying spontaneously. If I still can not find the answer despite of the break, I visit the Office for Learning Support frequently. Senior students are waiting as supporters there, and if you have any questions they kindly help me.

I do not have any specific image on my future profession yet, but I am willing to utilize my knowledge on computers about which I am studying with interest.

サークル活動について

Now I am a member of Brass Band Club. I started to join a brass band club when I was a junior high school student and I decided to continue at the University. Most of the club members have an experience of wind-instrument music. We practice about three times a week and members practice their own musical instruments individually. As the day of a concert at the cafeteria, stage etc. approaches, we have joint practice more frequently. But we basically prioritize studying, so unreasonable schedules are not planned and the amount of practice reduces as the examination period nears.

I can not play a musical instrument at home but I look over the musical scores when I have a spare time. Now I am trying to play a different type of musical instrument from the musical instrument I used to play. I like music and hope I can continue to play music.

学生生活について

I joined the summer open campus of the University of Aizu when I was a high school student and aspired to enter the University after I talked with students currently enrolled the University because I can attend a class from my home and I am not bad at computers. Another reason is that I wanted to stay in a snowy area because I like winter sports like skiing. I was attending a local high school, and a preparation class for the entrance exam was offered there. Thanks partly to it, I successfully passed the exam.

As my first surprise after the admission, I was able to make many female friends. There are not many female students at the University. Instead, we have strong solidarity. I belong to a joint club activity with the Junior College Division of the University of Aizu and made many friends of the College. I often feel that studying is more difficult than I expected, but I am trying to understand piece by piece with the cooperation of senior students and my friends, and I am somehow managing it.
Now I am spending busy but fulfilling days, working on a graduation thesis, attending class, working as an intern, joining in group activities that I started as its representative.

インターンについて

I started working as an intern by the invitation of my friend who had already been working as an intern. I had an interest in "Flash" but the software to create "Flash" is expensive, so I usually borrow the software from a faculty to create "Flash". The company that I worked for had the software and the manual/textbook. It was a perfect environment for me to learn "Flash". Basically, I was able to study Flash and work at my own pace. The company allowed me to take off from work during the busy period preparing for examinations. So, there was no impact on my study due to the internship. Rather, I was able to spend my time effectively because the company located near the University and I went there when I had a vacant time between classes.

I got involved in some works at the company while studying. What I remember the most is the work I created for an exhibition for introducing The Designium Inc. The final phase of the work was in spring vacation and I worked at the company almost every day. When I saw my work was shown at the exhibition, I felt a sense of accomplishment.

I sometimes worked up all night, but the effort and the experience were advantageous to my job-finding activities. My experience gained outside of ordinary campus life is great and precious for me today.
